In brief fragments that resemble a collection of fearless snapshots, this novel introduces Minette from every angle, taking apart certain myths about femininity that are plain for all to see. We learn what she does to her lovers and what her lovers do to her, what she likes or dislikes, what she thinks about this or that, about men in particular. For instance, she rejects the belief that the simplest living organisms are amoebas, claiming instead rather that they’re guys. They are reduced more or less to their balls, she says, where you’ll also find their brains. But if she possesses the disturbing spice that makes men run after her, it cannot be denied that she runs after men. In fact she’s one hell of a man-eater.

EXCERPT
A pleasant breeze was blowing over the spring at Savinatz and ruffling the young musicians’ hair. Puberty had already bestowed some fuzz above the upper lips of the boys, but you couldn’t see if it had also marked the girls in the group. First, Dickey Tchoukavatz arranged the musicians a good three metres away from one another, then ordered, Go ahead, children, play us some Brahms!
A pleasant breeze was blowing over the spring at Savinatz. When she saw Dickey looking under his seat and taking out some bottles of beer, Kitty felt for him something peculiar, something new to her. She wondered what that something new was called, while the emptiness inside her chest was beginning to take on the form of a human heart.
As soon as the quartet had overcome its shyness and started to play in a harmonious and convincing fashion, Dickey blindfolded the musicians so they couldn’t see while they were playing what he and Kitty were going to do. Why? Let them watch, she protested, firmly opposed to blindfolds, until Dickey had ripped off her clothes and tossed her, naked, over the hood of the car. “You’re a dumb dick,” she told him as she spread her legs. A pleasant breeze – you can take your pleasant breeze and stuff itup your ass! – was blowing over the spring at Savinatz.
